Jon Mattheis

Judging Experience: Jon has been judging marching bands for the past seven years with the Tri-State Judges Association out of Decorah, IA. He has also judged many solo & ensemble, jazz and concert band festivals in the upper midwest.
Teaching Experience: Jon has taught for 17 years and is currently the director of music at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD.
Bio: Jon is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. Music ensembles under Jon’s direction have consistently been awarded superior ratings at contests. Two concert bands under his direction, have performed at state music educator conventions. Jon lives in Sioux Falls, SD with his wife Devyn and their son.

Phil Snyder

Phil currently serves as a band director for the Waconia School district in Waconia, Minnesota. His duties include conducting 8th- and 9th-grade bands, team teaching high school Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Jazz band.
Phil is currently on the instructional staff for the Colts drum and Bugle Corps where he has taught for 8 of the past 11 years. He has also served on the brass staff for Minnesota Brass Drum and Bugle corps from 2009 through 2015. During his time with Minnesota Brass, the corps enjoyed two DCA brass titles as well as a DCA World Championship title in 2011.
In the marching band realm, Phil has become an accomplished drill designer and instructor writing 8-10 competitive and non-competitive field shows each year throughout the country. Bands that have used Phil’s designs have been responsible for eleven state championships.
Phil is an outspoken advocate for music education at all levels and enjoys a busy schedule as a guest clinician, adjudicator, and freelance trumpet player. He studied trumpet performance at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and music education at the University of Minnesota.
Outside of the music world Phil enjoys distance running, Nordic skiing and spending time with friends in the greater twin cities area.

David is currently band director at Wyoming City Schools District, Wyoming, OH. He teaches grades 5 – 12 Band, as well as middle school jazz band, high school jazz band, and marching band. He is the Music Caption Head for The Central States Judges Association of America and has been a member of the organization for 14 years. He judges Individual, Ensemble, and General Effect music throughout the fall season and is in demand as an adjudicator throughout the midwest. David also is a Music Analysis Judge for WGI Winds. David serves as a clinician for marching bands in the Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus, OH area. He is a Level Two Graduate of the Marching Roundtable Judges Academy.

Currently the Assistant Director at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Ca. Marched RCC Fall 3 years and was featured trombone soloist. Traveled to BOA twice with RCC and Rose Parade 4 times. Marched the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps for two years on Euphonium 2010 and 2011. Taught Blue Devils B Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest D&B Corps, and The Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps for two years. Earned Music Education Degree and Jazz Performance Degree from CSULB under Jeff Jarvis. Has been seen on several Television commercials, movies, and tv shows as a performer/background actor. I have written drill for indoor drumline, and marching band.

Chris Church

Chris Church is a 35-year Veteran Band Director. He served as the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chairman in Willard, Missouri for 32 years and is currently in Springdale, Arkansas teaching at Har-Ber High School, Southwest Junior High, and Helen Tyson Middle School. His marching bands and jazz bands have consistently placed at or near the top in all festivals attended and he has also worked as a drill designer for numerous bands throughout the Midwest. His Wind Symphony earned State Level Honor I Ratings for 32 consecutive years.

Chris spent 13 seasons with the World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois where he served on the Marching/Visual Staff. He has provided marching clinics and adjudicated marching bands throughout the United States while also judging concert and jazz ensembles. Chris is currently serving as a Visual Judge for Drum Corps International (DCI) and as a Winter Guard Judge for the Mid Continent Color Guard Association (MCCGA) and the Winter Guard and Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO). He is a graduate of the Marching Roundtable Judges academy and also adjudicates concert bands, solo & ensemble, and jazz festivals.

Casey Goodwin

Casey Goodwin is a Senior Lecturer and currently serves as the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New Hampshire, where she teaches undergraduate courses in the areas of conducting and music education and is responsible for directing the Wildcat Marching Band, UNH Concert Band, and Beast of the East Pep Band. Additionally, she is a faculty member and assistant coordinator of the University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) and a former conductor of the New Hampshire Youth Band. She is also the director of the Drum Major Track at the Summer Youth Music School.

Goodwin earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and her Master of Arts in Music with an emphasis in music education and wind conducting from the University of New Hampshire in 2001 and 2006, respectively. While enrolled in graduate school, Goodwin was a graduate assistant with the University of New Hampshire Bands and Department of Music.

Goodwin is a member of the College Band Directors’ National Association, National Association for Music Education, New Hampshire Band Directors Association, and serves as a Director on the Executive Board of and former Collegiate Coordinator for the New Hampshire Music Educators’ Association (NHMEA) and former Northeast District Governor of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary fraternity for college band members. She previously served on the NHMEA Association Review/Restructuring committee as well as the national nominations and curriculum committees for Kappa Kappa Psi. Goodwin also advises the UNH chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and serves on the Department of Music Recruiting, Retention, and Scholarship Committee.

Prior to her appointment at UNH, Goodwin was the Director of Instrumental Music at Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Maine, where she directed the MHS Concert Band, Marshwood Marching Hawks, Jazz Band, and pit orchestras for the district and high school musicals; started a string ensemble; and taught general music courses. The Marshwood Marching Hawks competed in the Maine Band Directors’ Association circuit, and Goodwin served as the webmaster for that organization.

In 2010, Goodwin had the opportunity to perform on marching baritone with the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps alumni in exhibition at the Drum Corps International semifinals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In addition to her work at UNH, she is also an active guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician throughout the northeast United States and has written drill and arranged music for several New England marching bands.

Phil Barnes
Since 1991

Phil Barnes has been the Instrumental Music Director at Rockville High School in Montgomery County, MD since 2003. In that time, he has developed the Marching Band program from one that stood still on the field into one that competes annually in the USBands Group I/IIA circuit. In addition to his duties at RHS, he also currently writes drill for non-competitive high school marching bands in the area, and he arranges shows and stand tunes for several bands, including Baltimore’s Marching Ravens. His major areas of expertise in the marching arts are saxophone, mellophone and drum major. Previous experience includes mellophone, drum major and instructional staff for Baltimore’s Marching Ravens, mellophone and drum major for the University of Maryland Marching Band, instructional staff for several competitive high school programs throughout Maryland, and saxophone and mellophone in his middle and high school marching bands.

Dominick Ferrara

Dr. Dominick Ferrara currently serves as Associate Professor of Music Education, Director of the Day Sessions Young Performers Summer Program, and Conductor of the Symphonic Winds at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he teaches courses in instrumental music education and conducting. For his work at Berklee, Dr. Ferrara was awarded the Professional Education Division’s Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008.
Formerly, Dr. Ferrara served as the Founding Director (2003-2006) of the Fairleigh Dickinson University (Teaneck, NJ) Pep Band, the Founding Director (1997-2009) of the Wind Ensemble at Montclair State (NJ) University’s Stokes Forest Music Camp, and Director of Bands (1996-2006) at Lenape Valley Regional High School (Stanhope, NJ). While at Lenape Valley Regional High School, Dr. Ferrara’s bands won 2 USSBA (now USBands) Group I-A All-States Marching Band Championships and received numerous Superior ratings at concert festivals throughout the United States. For his public school teaching, Dr. Ferrara was awarded a Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award by the State of New Jersey Department of Education in 2000 and was named as a 2005 Finalist for the Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching.
He holds a BA in Music Education, Summa Cum Laude, from Montclair State University and both an MAT in Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education from Rutgers University, where his specializations were Educational Administration/Supervision and Wind Conducting. He is an active adjudicator, clinician, guest conductor, educational consultant, and free-lance performer. Among his many performance credits are concert appearances with The Temptations; Broadway star, Bernadette Peters; the Portland (ME) Symphony Orchestra; and the United States Coast Guard Band and Chamber Players. He is a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
